The main event on Saturday for most people was wood selection for guitars. Before turning forum members loose, Bob Taylor and Ed Alves discussed what can and cannot be done on guitars. Here is Meridian with his set of wood for his dreadnought. Do you think he is happy with his set of cocobolo? It certainly is a gorgeous set. He coupled it with a beautiful sitka spruce top.
I was also on a quest for cocobolo. For awhile I didn't think I was going to get anything, as I was looking for a set with fairly straight grain with no sapwood, large enough for a two-piece dreadnought. But a few hours later, Chris brought back some really nice wood. Here are both sides of my set.
I was planning on just having the capable people at Taylor choose my top wood, but Bob Taylor insisted we go through the sitka and choose one together. I told him what kind of sound I wanted from the guitar and he carefully looked through his remaining sets.
After choosing the top wood, he started on the back and sides, removing the small amount of sapwood and drawing how the back would be cut out. He also notated on the sides which side would join with the top as well as where the waist would be.
It was wonderful to be able to "see" my guitar before the wood was cut into guitar shapes.
